Ladakh-The Cold Desert
Ladakh means the ‘’land of high
passes ‘’is a region of Jammu & Kashmir. It is one of the most sparsely
populated regions of Jammu & Kashmir. Ladakh region included the following
valleys:
Indus valley, zangskar valley, lahul
& spiti valley, akshi chin & nagari valley and nubra valley.ladakh
boarders Tibet to east and lahul-spiti to south.ladakh is known for its remote
mountain beauty and culture.ladakh is strongly influenced by Tibetan culture.
The largest town in Ladakh is leh
Suru & zangskar valley the
biggest part of Ladakh, Rangdum is the highest inhibited region in the suru
valley.kargil is the second most important town in Ladakh .kargil is about 230
km from Srinagar.
The Indus River is the back bone of
Ladakh and towns-shey, leh, basgo and tingmosgang are situated close to Indus
river.ladakh is the high altitude cold desert and it’s a rain shadow area. This
area experience heavy snowfall so remain cut off from rest of the region for
several months in a year. Summers are short but long enough to grow crops.
Summer weather is dry and pleasant, temp ranges 3 to 35 in summer and minimum
range -20 to -35 in winter.
